Chris Carr has only been in the hair business for a short 5 years, but he’s already accomplished a lot; he’s a balayage, blonde and long hair specialist, a Master Designer, of course, a certified Great Lengths Artist, and 2018 was a year of both professional and personal highlights. With a plethora of extremely satisfied clients, a dedication to his craft and some serious ambition, we can’t wait to see what is in store for Chris in 2019. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CAREER! My name is Chris Carr and I’m 23 years old. I’m from Fredericton, New Brunswick and I have been a hairstylist for five years. I enrolled in hair school as soon as I graduated high school, so my career began at a very young age and from the start I took it very seriously. After moving away for year, I returned back to my hometown and began posting my work anywhere, and everywhere I could. I had to start from scratch, but I knew with a lot of marketing and self-promotion, I could build my clientele. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH GREAT LENGTHS; WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION TO JOIN THE GL NETWORK? I have been working with Great Lengths for just under a year now and I absolutely love it! I have always been so passionate about extensions. Growing up, I was always aware of Great Lengths and I couldn’t wait to one day work with them. WHAT IMPACT HAS BEING A GREAT LENGTHS ARTIST HAD ON YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS? Being a Great Lengths artist has given me access to a premium, luxury service and the ability to offer that service to my guests. My clients appreciate that I’ve taken the time to learn; to receive the education that enables me to work with Great Lengths and to complete a proper and impressive application. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT GREAT LENGTHS? I love how natural they look! And how they flare out towards the bottom, adding lots of thickness for the most natural result. It’s incredible! I’ve worked with other extension brands and none of them blended and applied so beautifully. I also love that there truly is a colour for everyone! CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING THE SALON RESOURCE GROUP PROSPERITY AWARD RECENTLY! TELL US A BIT ABOUT THIS AND WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU. Thank you so much! To me, this award was a recognition of all of the hard work and determination that I have put into my career thus far. When I received it, I thought to myself, “okay, so all this hard work actually is paying off.” It keeps me going and has actually pushed me to work even harder. I’m so appreciative and grateful to work for such an amazing company and to have the boss that I do! WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE HAIR TREND RIGHT NOW? WHY DO YOU LOVE IT? I’m a beach wave kind of guy. I’m loving loose curls in a high ponytail with some volume. It’s such an easy style that can be worn for so many different occasions and can even go from day to night. And I can’t go without mentioning balayage! The balayage trend is here to stay. It can be done in so many ways! My clients absolutely love how low maintenance it is and that it can brighten up their look without it being too harsh. DO YOU HAVE ANY COLOUR OR STYLE PREDICTIONS FOR THE START OF 2019? Cutting your hair off seemed to be the big thing a year or so ago, but I think a lot of people are growing their hair out right now. I predict Great Lengths will see a major increase in 2019… everyone seems to want that super long Kardashian look! DO YOU HAVE A STYLE ICON? OR A HAIR HERO? My hair icons are Jessica Alba, Julianne Hough and Blake Lively. They all have such beautiful hair! My hair hero would have to be Princess Diana. I always loved her style and elegance. She never had long hair, but she started so many iconic hair trends and looks. I can only imagine what she’d be like today! IF YOU COULD PICK A CELEBRITY, A PUBLIC FIGURE, ANYONE WHOSE HAIR WOULD YOU LOVE TO WORK ON? Easy. Britney Spears! She’s my idol and it would be a dream to do her hair! WHAT OR WHO DO YOU LOOK TO FOR INSPIRATION? I think Steven Mathew is super cool and I love Kevin Christopher’s work too. I think us guys have to stick together! As far as inspiration, I look to pop culture and all of the iconic looks! Right now, we’re seeing the iconic long and straight look worn by Cher back in the 70’s and I love that elements and styles from the past are making a comeback! WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER NEWLY CERTIFIED STYLISTS TO BEST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR GL SKILLSET? I would say: take your time during your applications, don’t rush. I’d also say don’t give up if you don’t get a lot of clients at first... It takes time, marketing and promotion. DO YOU HAVE ANY GREAT LENGTHS DO'S AND DON’TS? A huge no-no that I have learned is to not take too big of a section. DO: keep your sectioning clean. A clean section makes for a perfect application and a beautiful set of Great Lengths! WHAT PERSONALITY TRAITS DO YOU FEEL ARE MOST BENEFICIAL TO YOUR SUCCESS? I think being outgoing and not being afraid to put myself out there has really helped me get to where I am today. I’ve been a hair stylist for just 5 years and I believe that part of my success is due to staying busy. I’ve never allowed myself to not be busy. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF BEING A STYLIST? My favourite part of being a stylist is having the ability to change someone’s life; to make them feel beautiful and to help them see their beauty. I love knowing that my guests are walking out of the salon looking and feeling their best! DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MANTRA, A QUOTE OR A SAYING YOU LIKE TO KEEP IN MIND? I’ve always liked the saying, “You’re the CEO of your own chair.” To me, that means if you want to be successful, you have to work for it and can never let your chair be empty. CONGRATULATIONS ON GETTING ENGAGED THIS PAST YEAR! BETWEEN THIS AND YOUR PROSPERITY AWARD, 2018 WAS QUITE THE YEAR FOR YOU! WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS MOVING INTO 2019? Thank you so much! My fiancé, Jacob, knows all about Great Lengths and my passion for them. We started dating when I was in hair school and he’s always been so supportive of me and my career. I’m so lucky to have him in my life. My goals moving into 2019 are to buy my first home, and to keep working hard and doing what I love! I think one of the keys to happiness is finding something that you’re passionate about and going for it! I’m so grateful for all of my amazing clients who allow me to do what I love to do. I want to take this as an opportunity to say thank you from the bottom of my heart... I’m very lucky to wake up and go to work each day doing something that I absolutely love, and I can’t wait to continue in 2019! FOLLOW CHRIS ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM.
Have a look at each of our Transformation of the Month’s from 2018! Click through to learn about each transformation, and to hear from the stylist about their 2018 highlights and thoughts on the upcoming new year. JANUARY Marianne Savage @burlingtonbeautybar This transformation was noticed globally; Great Lengths Ireland gave it a well-deserved shout out on Instagram. Marianne’s client had used extensions before, but not Great Lengths. Her very fine hair was under major stress from improper treatment by stylists, while also feeling the effects of suffering from stress and anxiety. Using two bundles, with most cut in half and some in thirds, Marianne created a beautiful, natural and healthy look. Since this application, this client has seen much more growth in her natural hair. In 2019, Marianne thinks clients should resolve to… “Use the best products you can! You won’t have to wash as often or styling your hair will take less work. And, if your day isn’t going well- stop what you’re doing and get a blowout. Having beautiful hair is a pick me up!” As for 2019 Trends: “Anything goes. And that’s great because we are all so different!” Looking back on 2018… It was a great year! Becoming a Great Lengths educator, and building a new salon for myself and my clients to feel at home in were my highlights. FEBRUARY Jenna Bosch @jennaengelhair For this dramatic transformation Jenna used 3 bundles of #59 in 20”. The result? A silky-smooth, ultra-long, ultra-blond finish. Jenna’s 2019 hair resolutions for clients: “I’m always encouraging my clients to use less heat on their hair and to deep condition! These two very important things make a massive difference in the integrity of the hair! When using any heat tool, make sure you use a high-quality thermal protectant and turn the temperature down. Fine, thin, or pre-lightened hair should not have anything hotter then 320 degrees F.” Jenna’s personal goal for 2019: “Win a Contessa! I love doing photoshoot work. It really keeps me thinking outside the box and gives me the opportunity to create looks my clients wouldn’t typically ask for!” Her 2018 highlight: “Mentoring the group of young stylists on our team; watching them mature and grow their skills above and beyond their own expectations.” MARCH Jo-Anny Raymond-Proulx @joannydoeshair Jo-Anny took this client from drab to fab. An amazing transformation from damaged, short and dead-looking, to long, shiny, healthy-looking hair. Jo-Anny’s tips for success in 2019: “Be kind, open-minded, always curious to know better, and have passion for what you’re doing.” IN for 2019? “Warm tones! And babylights will be the new balayage.” The highlight of her year? “My regular clients, who keep coming back because they are happy with my work and love what I do. A great result of the passion and love that I put towards what I do!” APRIL Steven Mathew @stevenmathew Having previously worn a different type and method of extension, Steven’s guest was super excited to try Great Lengths. A pre-blend of approximately 200+ bonds in shades 9, 67 and 68 in mostly extra fine (1/3) and fine (1/2) sized bonds were used. This guest has loved her Great Lengths so much, she is having Steven install her third set at the end of this month! Success! Steven’s mantra for 2019: “Obsessed with giving my best! “As with anything I do creatively, I am committed to giving my all to every project, so I can continue to grow and excel, and most importantly, continue to feel proud of myself while doing so.” A must-do for stylist success in 2019: “For the past few years, it has been essential for anyone looking for continued success in the beauty industry to advertise on social media. That’s here to stay, but the way people are engaging with beauty posts is changing. A beautiful photo is not enough anymore. People are looking to make an authentic connection with an influencer or a brand, and are becoming less tolerant of being inundated with posts that seem to be lacking in authenticity. Share that beautiful photo but include your story. It's the stories that make us relatable, and in turn will yield greater success.” Steven’s highlight of 2018: “When I think back on 2018, undoubtedly the biggest change I made was stepping up my game and offering Great Lengths for my guests. One look at my Instagram will tell you it was a highlight!” MAY Élodie Picard @elodiepicard09 This client initially had very short hair, before adding extensions she let her hair grow for about 4 months. Elodie used 5 packs of 16 inch, and her salon’s colourist, Catherine, added highlights. The client loved the result! She wore the extensions for 5 months and at the time of removal, her natural hair had grown significantly and was left very healthy. Élodie’s 2019 must-do’s for success: “Be open-minded. Pay attention to detail! Every detail is important. Always offer the latest and the best in home care. And, give your client an exceptional experience every time they are in your chair.” Her 2019 career goals: “I’d like to develop a new target clientele: mature women who are not familiar with hair extension services, to propose fuller hair, while keeping things discrete and natural-looking.” Looking back… and looking forward: “The salon where I work, Guylaine Martel Artistes Coiffeurs, has an International reputation, giving all of us in the salon the chance to shine. In 2018, the owner and artistic director, Guylaine Martel, travelled with the Enchanted Show for L’Oréal Pro. In 2019, Guylaine Martel will be taking on the Artistic Direction for La Biosthetique Paris- a new and exciting adventure for all of us in the salon! We’re all very much looking forward to it.” JUNE Britney McCulloch @wisphairbyb Britney’s client, Holly, had worn Great Lengths before and loved them, so when she was looking for a change, she knew where to turn. Holly has fine hair but a lot of it, so Britney used a mix of fine and full bonds to create this look. Two bundles of #23, two of #67 and one of #61 were used for this look, resulting in perfectly blended blonde. Britney’s 2018 highlight: “Salon Wisp celebrated one-year downtown Burlington! It’s safe to say we love the community we’re in.” She recommends client’s resolve to… “Ditch your hair elastics! There’s no question all of us long haired ladies like to put our hair up, but regular elastics pull on your hair and cause stress. Using something like a ribbon hair tie or a scrunchie is a lot more forgiving.” Britney’s must-do for stylist success in 2019: “Market yourself online daily, social media obviously isn’t going anywhere. The majority of clients aren’t coming to our salon by chance, they have carefully selected us through social media.” JULY Lauren Rossi @laurenemilyyy Want more blonde? Great Lengths is the way to go! That desire for more blonde, and more length, inspired this transformation. Instead of using bleach, Lauren opted for Great Lengths extensions to help keep her client’s hair healthy. Three bundles of 16 were used to achieve length, volume and that perfect blonde. Lauren’s mantra for 2019: If anything is worth doing, do it with all your heart- Buddha Her tips for stylist success in 2019 are simple… “Work hard and stay authentic.” The highlight of her year? “Introducing Great Lengths in our hair salon was a big turning point for us this year. Having already worked with these extensions in the past, we knew our clients would be getting the finest quality products and services.” AUGUST Tiara Noname @Tiaramyhair Tiara dubbed this look, The Raechel. This transformation used a full head of full bond, 16-inch extensions in a blend of four different colours. Alternating strands and alternating colours made this transformation beautifully natural looking! Tiara encourages clients to resolve to… “Try something different in the New Year. Extensions can give you the hair you’ve always dreamed of! Talk to your stylist about your options.” Her motto for 2019? “I can, and I will. “ Her highlight of 2018: “2018 was an amazing year! The highlight would be completing the Great Lengths course and becoming certified in the cold fusion/flat bond method. Pun intended, it has been a great extension to services I currently offer. “ SEPTEMBER Naomi Raye @nomeraye Naomi’s client Kendall came to her after the birth of her second baby with concerns that her hairline was getting finer. She was missing that full bang that she used to have. Naomi achieved this look with GL Tapes. They give that volume at the front, allowing the hair to fall nicer, and cover a larger area. Her client is absolutely loving them! Naomi recommends clients resolve to… “To treat your hair like it’s “dry clean only”! We go to the salon and spend money to get our hair healthy and shiny and then go home and use the cheapest product and expect it to be maintained. I want clients to see the benefits of home care. Instead of hearing, “my hair never looks like this when I do it at home”, I want to hear, “Oh my god, my hair has never felt or looked better!” Her thoughts on 2019 trends… “Trends are mostly guidelines for us to follow. It is our job as stylists to tweak them and make them work in a way that is best suited to a client’s needs and look. I’d love to see a more modern mullet come back. It sounds crazy, but Joan Jett, Cher and Jane Fonda all rocked it. Upgrade to years ahead and move towards a strong, face-framing, long fringe.” The highlight of her year? “Throughout your career you hear all kinds of stories from people. This year I was honoured to meet a few people who overcame cancer and hear their stories. Women going through cancer treatments often say the treatment itself didn’t scare them, but the thought of losing their hair was unimaginable. After meeting with them, helping them attain hair they thought would be completely unachievable was the best feeling in the world. It was a challenge for me, and for Great Lengths. My expectations were high for GL and they came through. I was able to help these ladies have the confidence to look in the mirror again. I love empowering women to stand tall and be proud of who they are and sometimes it starts with a great head of hair. Giving back to the community in the one way I know best was my highlight this year, and that’s fixing a fellow woman’s crown when she needed it most.” OCTOBER Frank Saab @saabsalonspa This client had never been able to achieve the length she desired due to the texture of her hair, combined with damage from blonde processing. At first, she was a little nervous and skeptical; she didn’t want to have noticeable extensions. After seeing some of Saab Salon’s other transformations however, her skepticism turned to excitement. By using 2 different blonde tones in 16” length, Frank was able to achieve a seamless blend for a very natural look, resulting in one extremely happy client! Frank’s predictions for style in the New Year: “I think we will see the revival of BOLD, long hair. With Great Lengths comes great responsibility.” His 2019 career goals: “After doing hair for so long and being a lifetime student of the craft, my goals moving forward are to mentor others and push them to reach greatness.” The Saab Salon 2018 highlight: “We were asked to participate in Creatif Canada in Toronto, where we had the opportunity to do hair on stage. Créatif celebrates the craft and community of hair artistry and design in Canada. Aiming to showcase the talent in Canada’s creative hubs from coast-to-coast; Créatif is the place to witness and be inspired by Canada’s creative community of visionaries within the world of hair artistry and beyond.”

Licensed beauty professionals from across the country came together on November 4, 2018 to celebrate at the 30th annual Contessa Awards gala. To honour this landmark anniversary, the coveted competition sparkled like never before at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto. The Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards - the Contessas – are the gold standard in Canadian beauty awards and Great Lengths Canada could not be more proud to be a sponsor! Since 1988, each year the Contessas bring the best of Canada’s talent together to measure their creativity in a photo-based competition open to all licensed beauty professionals from coast to coast. 23 awards were presented to the biggest names in Canadian beauty. In addition to 19 awards honouring excellence in hairstyling, further awards include Canadian Nail Artist of the Year, Makeup Artist of the Year, Salon Interior Design and The John Steinberg Award for Community Service. Entrants in the photo-based awards remain anonymous through two rounds of judging performed by panels of independent experts. The first round of judging is live, performed by judges selected from within the Canadian professional beauty industry. The second is performed online, by experts from around the world. In the past, this panel has included beauty editors, photographers and celebrity hairstylists. Being awarded a Contessa from this panel of best-in-class artists and professionals is a true honour; excellent for a portfolio and reputation, and better still for business and opening doors! Our Great Lengths Canada team proudly presented the award for Avant Garde Hairstylist of the year to winner, Silas Tsang, of Blushes Salon in Ottawa. Silas also won the honour of Elite Master Hairstylist. Such amazing talent - congratulations Silas! We’d like to congratulate all the winners and finalists on their inspirational work. The outstanding creativity of these collections continues to push boundaries and challenge stylists to reach new heights. VIEW THE FULL LIST OF CONTESSA 2019 WINNERS

A number of women experience hair loss, thinning hair, or fine hair. While it’s nothing to be ashamed of, it can definitely affect a woman’s confidence. Aaron O'Bryan from the Cellar Salon in Yorkville comes to the rescue! On Friday’s appearance on Marilyn Denis, Aaron gave three women makeovers to enhance their thinning hair, using First Lady and Great Lengths Products. Aaron gives Lisa, the third featured makeover, Great Lengths Tapes to help her with her “shrinking hair.” Lisa has a nice amount of hair on the top of her head, but experiences problems with breakage, and has trouble growing her hair. WHEN ASKED HOW SHE WAS FEELING AFTER HER MAKEOVER, SHE SAID SHE FELT “GRATEFUL, GRATEFUL, GRATEFUL, GRATEFUL, GRATEFUL… GRATEFUL! I FEEL LIKE I WON THE LOTTERY.” “The Royalty of Hair,” as Aaron calls them, Great Lengths Tapes, are not for hair loss, but instead are for fine hair, or hair that is lacking length and/or body. Lisa is a swimmer and her GL Tapes will fit nicely into her lifestyle; while swimming she’ll either tie her hair up or tuck her hair into a swim cap. With her GL Tapes, Lisa is set for approximately 8 weeks, at which point Aaron will remove, and reapply her Tapes up to three more times, depending on how well she cares for them Before and after GL Tapes
Fashion shows exemplify the role of the catwalk in creating innovative and lust-worthy hairstyle trends for the upcoming seasons, while demonstrating how hair itself can be a canvas for creativity, imagination, and experimentation. They offer endless hair-spiration, especially for Fall. Fall is a season for dynamic renewal, for experimentation and fresh approaches to conventional looks. Embrace the transitioning season and try something new! We’ve taken a good look at the Fall 2018 hairstyle trends that rocked the runways and chose five to inspire you as the new season begins. Headbands & hair accessories Headbands, bobby pins, head pieces and hair adornments; hair accessories of all kinds will all be big for Fall, embracing the theme of individualism. Headbands in particular are on trend. Seen on the runway for Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana and more, a headband can add style and warmth to a fall ensemble. Ranging from heavily ‘90s inspired, to princess-y with sparkling embellishments, you can use an accessory to pull the hair back or let your locks loose. Prabal Gurung, Tom Ford For a look with a bit of a punk vibe, Tom Ford models wore thick leather headbands tied around their heads. The stretch zig-zag headbands of yesterday also made an appearance as a fall 2018 hair accessory trend, thanks to Prabal Gurung. Anyone who has worn them may remember that they stretched really well and looked great on most hair types. Also spotted: banana clips. Past trends turned runway chic will definitely please your inner 90’s child! Another look that’s easy to incorporate into many hair types and styles are classic bobby pins used in creative ways. Curtain fringe & variations Bangs of all variations have been big in 2018 thus far, and they’ll continue to be in style for Fall. Championed and iconized by Brigitte Bardot, this bang style has been worn by countless women since, especially this year. Pinterest searches for “curtain bangs” rose 600 percent earlier in the year, and continue to be popular as the cooler months arrive. The long, tapered look works for every texture and length; proportions can be played with to create facial contours, symmetry, and angles. Worn soft, long and side-swept; the piecey and textured bangs are easy to style and versatile to wear – to the side, split down the middle, or flying whichever way they please. However they fall, they're bound to look perfectly tousled. Curtain fringe are subject to endless variations. Variations seen on the runways of various Fall fashion shows included center-parted at Jason Wu, and side-swept at Fendi. Fendi, Jason Wu, Ashley Williams Slicked back hair & Sleek ponytails Slick hair and sleek ponytails create a look of decisiveness and confidence. One of the best examples of this hairstyle trend for Fall 2018 was the vixen-esque slicked back, center-parted hair on the runway at the Brandon Maxwell show. At Alexander McQueen, ponytails were tightly slicked for a daring and provocative look. The slicked back look is a little easier to incorporate off the runway than its cousin trend, ‘wet hair’. The hyper-sleek style doesn’t flatter all face shapes or aesthetics, but when it does work, it works well. The sleek ponytail style is simple but glamorous; glossy, straight strands are understated and elegant. Both looks feature sharp lines that are sleek and chic. For a finish that’s smooth and not greasy, use a hair mousse rather than gel. This look is popular off the runway as well, and has been spotted on many celebrities. Think Jennifer Lopez at the 2018 Met Gala. Messy buns & top knots Who doesn’t love a messy bun? This simple and quick go-to look was spotted all over Fall 2018 fashion shows. Chanel sent models down the runway sporting them, as did Tom Ford. If anyone was going to make the messy bun feel luxurious - aside from Meghan Markle perhaps - it was going to be Chanel. Designers made this casual style look ultra-chic. Chanel The messy bun is more fun than its straight-laced cousins for a couple of reasons. Its appeal lies in its ease: just grab a hair tie and let the magic happen. You’ll create an air of effortless, imperfect, perfection. This Fall, you can go classic with the straightforward messy bun or top-knot, or you can get a little creative with the approach. Find inspiration in Chanel’s high messy bun paired with neat, slicked back hair ascending into a messy top knot, for an interesting approach with a beautiful contrast; or look to the styling at Carolina Herrera, where messy buns got a complex makeover with a detailed pin-up configuration and strategic tangles. Intricate braids & Braided up-dos Braids have a romantic, ethereal, storybook appeal. There is something timelessly feminine and alluring about them; they are pretty much ALWAYS on trend, and that’s no different for Fall 2018. Braids add texture to the hair without being overwhelming. Never confined to any one region, braids look great from the nape to the crown, making them the perfect choice for many. Ranging in complexity from the super simple to the challenging, braids are not restricted to any one silhouette this season. You’ll see looks ranging from edgy, rock and roll to dainty, ballerina braided tiaras. Braids spotted on the runway included face-framing duo braids, braided chignons, delicate and romantic braids, dominatrix-inspired ultra-long braids, futuristic braids, and tiny French braids; the variety was endless; making them something anyone can work into their look this fall.
