HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH GREAT LENGTHS WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION TO JOIN THE GREAT LENGTHS NETWORK? I have been working with Great Lengths for about 5 years. I hated hair extensions prior to knowing them! I made the decision to add Great Lengths to my services because I want the best of the best for my clients. WHEN YOU ORIGINALLY TRAINED WITH GREAT LENGTHS, WHAT DID YOU EXPECT TO GET OUT OF IT? HAS GREAT LENGTHS FULFILLED THOSE EXPECTATIONS? First, I wanted to get a deep understanding of the product. I always tell stylists I have just trained that they are becoming masters of illusion. They have the power to change things, create the impossible, make it real. Nobody likes poor work. WHAT ARE YOUR COLOUR PREDICTION FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS? This summer, all colours are trendy as long as the women wearing them own and embrace them. Now more than ever, women need to live fashion, not just wear it. In a nutshell: be the trend, do not just wear it! Whether you are blond, a redhead or a brunette, you must own your colour. Just like the essences that comprise the scent of a fragrance, multiple pigments combine to bring your colour to life. Tiger Eye Balayage The new bronde. Named after the stone, Tiger Eye Balayage is a mix of beautiful caramel and deep brown highlights. This look compliments warm brunette tones rich in gold, amber and honey shades. Tiger Eye Balayage works on all hair lengths. It looks awesome on a short bob. Rocking the Metal “Metallic tones are also in popular demand,” says colourist Allison Rappel. “These tones include a ‘metal’ like finish and can vary in tone.” The Melting Pot Piggy-backing off Tiger Eye Balayage, Tyler Colton, a stylist who works with Roselyn Sanchez and Constance Wu, says that “colour melting” will continue to thrive this year. “Colour melting is the new trend that allows colourists to use multiple tones of colour to create seamless colour from root to ends, whether you are a brunette or a blonde,” he says. Rose Gold Blondes “For blondes, during the spring season I recommend a rose gold shade,” says Sam Ruvinov, senior colorist at Julien Farel.
SUMMER: The season of sun, sweat, salt water & chlorine. Each can be factors in damaging your natural hair as well as your extensions. Bonded extensions’ biggest threat can be water, especially salt or chlorine enriched water! Chemicals in our pools and salt in the ocean can dry out the extensions and damage the bonds. If your client is going to swim, we suggest braiding and putting the hair up on top of the head, so it is not submerged into the water. If the extensions do get wet, take special care by washing the hair with any Great Lengths shampoo, followed by Anti-Tap Water, and then the Great Lengths Deep Conditioning Mask. Dry the bonds immediately. These are key ingredients for keeping their mermaid mane beautiful! THE SCIENCE: THE AVERAGE PERSON’S PH IS 5.5. WHEN WE SWEAT OUR PH LEVELS RISE AND BECOME ALKALINE (HAVING A PH GREATER THAN 7.) For our active clients or those who worship the sun, it is important to advise them to wash their hair with Great Lengths Shampoo, followed by Conditioner and Anti-Tap solution to restore their natural PH levels. The Anti-Tap solution can be pre-made and carried with them when on the move. We also suggest refreshing the solution every 3 weeks. POOL AND SEA HAIR: The best way to restore the PH balance of your scalp and hair is by using our Anti-Tap Water Spray to re-infuse your hair with that much needed moisture. TANGLE TAMING: To minimize as many knots and tangles as possible, we recommend tying your hair up in a loose bun or a neat plait. If you’re going to get your hair wet it’s much easier to avoid knots if your hair has been tied back. BRUSHING: The right brush is also an absolute must for us! I was inspired to become a Great Lengths artist after I had taken a course in Toronto called, Inspiring Champions. They discussed the hair industry and broke down the different categories of stylists and what you could achieve with your career. Great Lengths was a perfect vehicle for me to fulfill my goals to become a specialized stylist. It has allowed me the opportunity to offer a luxury service to my clients for all their hair needs, and grow my business at the same time. YouTube was the best platform for me to educate, because my clients could watch the videos whenever they were in need and had access 24/7. Some of my videos are direct questions clients have asked me and others are for marketing purposes when I want to promote a specific service or product. WHAT STRENGTHS DO YOU FEEL HELP YOU AS A BLOGGER? One of my strengths that has helped me is my tenacity. I will continue to work on something until I see improvement solely out of stubbornness! WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I always look to my clients for inspiration! ON YOUR WEBSITE YOU STATE THAT IN YOUR YOUNGER YEARS YOU WERE UNCOMFORTABLE IN YOUR OWN SKIN. HOW DID YOUR CAREER IN HAIRSTYLING HELP YOU TO MOVE PAST THAT? Hairstyling has definitely allowed me to be more confident. One of the things I love most about the hair industry is, it encourages uniqueness. I work side by side with some of the most talented hairstylists in my city and we are all extremely different from each other. When I was younger, I felt uncomfortable because I was always trying to fit in. Now, I have the privilege of expressing myself in whatever way I see fit and I am accepted and even praised for it. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I manage my time with a fierce schedule. Even going so far as to plan date nights with my husband or I don’t see him. I also outsource what I can, like optimizing the SEO’s for my blog posts; I have no interest or skill so I would rather pay someone else to do it and focus on what I do well. I am motivated by my dreams and aspirations, but sometimes it’s hard in the daily grind of it all. WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHER STYLISTS TO START A BLOG? Only if they have an overall strategy of where they want to go and what they want to achieve. It’s a lot of work, and only reaps rewards if you are consistent. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS MOVING FORWARD? My goals moving forward are: to keep competing in hair shows and staying abreast of current fashion, to continue educating and inspiring my clients and to grow my influence in a positive and impactful way. As a Great Lengths Extensions Artist, I have the chance to give people the hair they have always wanted.
